Here’s what happens when you ask AI to design you a logo

Last week I hit a roadblock when trying to design a logo for a new campaign at one of my jobs. I was stressed, under pressure, and didn’t know who to turn to. So, naturally, I turned to AI. I mean, who else hasn’t been entranced by ChatGPT and the new (yet scary) normal that AI is making for us?

That’s right – I, along with artificial intelligence, brainstormed some logo ideas.

I will preface this by saying that this AI usage was merely used for inspiration and brainstorming, as using an image from an AI software would not be appropriate or ethical to claim as my own design. Despite this, using AI for inspiration is akin to what I would do if I went to Pinterest to find some ideas.

Let’s say I am trying to make a logo for a skincare brand called Breathe. Through their branding, they want to portray wellness, self-care, and a soft tone. If I input this message into ChatGPT, here is what is generated:

Almost immediately, ChatGPT comes up with 5 ideas:

  1. A minimalist logo with a watercolor plant illustration, depicting a gentle and soothing skincare experience. The logo could incorporate a light and calming color palette of pastel greens or blues, with the brand name in a soft, elegant font.

  1. A logo that features a pair of hands cradling a botanical or natural element, such as a flower or herb. This design could highlight the natural and nurturing qualities of the skincare line, while emphasizing the self-care aspect.

  1. A logo that incorporates a simple, abstract illustration of a face or a body, possibly with a serene expression. This design could be complemented with a soft, calming color scheme, conveying the idea of promoting overall wellness through gentle, nourishing skincare.

  1. A logo featuring a stylized version of the brand name, possibly with a subtle reference to natural elements, such as a leaf or a drop of water. This design could convey a sense of elegance and sophistication, while also promoting a holistic approach to skincare.

  1. A logo with a simple, yet memorable symbol that conveys the brand's values of self-care and well-being. This symbol could be a combination of abstract shapes, like circles and curves, or an illustration of a natural element, like a leaf or a flower, in a soft, muted color palette.

As a designer, these may seem generic, yes. But for someone needing some inspiration, this can be exactly what is needed to get the creative juices flowing!

Next, let’s hit up LogoAi. Here we need to establish a visual feeling for the brand we are going for. I definitely think warm and pastel are two words that can be used to describe Breathe.

After a few more questions, BAM! LogoAi already has mocked up quite a few.

Now, LogoAi’s ideas align partially with some of what ChatGPT recommended, but I will say that there is a bit of disconnect. LogoAi recommended some bring yellows and sharp shapes as ideas, which are clearly not what we are looking for with this design. Despite this, it still had some great starts that could be ideas to translate into Illustrator or brainstorming.

Of course, there are only two examples of many platforms that are bursting into existence and popularity.

Huge companies, even Adobe, are entering the AI scape, releasing Adobe Firefly, a way to integrate Adobe’s AI-generated images with your design flow. Although it is only In it’s beta phase right now, it is truly incredible how this technology can transform our work as designers.

That being said, is the career for illustrators, designers, and photographers at risk? Well, that’s a conversation for another day. For now, AI is still designing mediocre logos.
